Based on my ACT scores I was able to be placed in RHT 150. I knew I had trouble with grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and other basic writing skills, I didn’t think I would succeed at that level. That reason alone is why I dropped down to RHT 102 – basic writing. I expect this class to help me with basic concepts in writing and give me the confidence to move forward. The novels: Arc of Justice by Kevin Boyle, An Unquiet Mind by Kay Jamison and Possible Lives by Mike Rose has nothing to do with the subject of basic writing. However, if I read John R. Trimble, Writing with Style it will help me complete my task of gaining more knowledge about writing and how to better myself. I also believe that a text book should be related to the course.

My decision in the book Arc of Justice was based on my interest in segregation and the struggles of African Americans. All my life I have been astonished at how our country could treat people with such disrespect and hatred. If I am going to read material for class, I must have some interest in the reading. If I have an interest in the material I will actually learn and retain the information better.

During class this past Tuesday we were able to choose between four books to read. After looking at all four of the books the one I liked best was An Unquiet Mind, by Kay Jamison. This book appealed to be interesting to me for several reasons. My senior year of High School I took a Psychology class and I really enjoyed learned about disabilities and different diseases. This book is a memoir of moods and madness focusing on manic depression. I am very excited to read this book especially because it is a national bestseller.

There are several reasons why I choose to read "A Unquiet Mind" written by Kay Redfield Jamison.By readying the description it gives a brief idea what the book is about. In the description it tells us "A Unquiet Mind" is based on a true story of someones life. Someone who tells her life story from being ill at the age of seventeen and struggled with life. Just by reading the desciption of this book I found that it would be very intrusting to read. Also that when I read "A Unquiet Mind" it will be a book that I will enjoy reading because it's based on a true story. Overall, these are just a few things I read about the book that lead me to wana read it.

I chose the book An Unquiet Mind by Kay Jamison because the book looked very interesting and had a lot of character. The fact that she started to suffer from manic-depression about my age, I think I could really relate to what she was going through at such a young age. Also, the fact that she now is helping patients go through and recover from what she had once suffered.

As I was reading the back of the book two words caught my eye. Words that I’ve learn, I didn’t want to put it down. I was excited because this book looks like something I need to me that day I looked up manic depression which is a mental disorder and learning this will help me personally and in the future when I become a nurse. I could not help but, to choose the book, “Unquiet Mind” by Kay Jaimison. As soon as I bought the book I had to read the first couple of pages and I only want to read more. I cant wait to see what happens.

The book that I have choose to read in my rhetoric class is called " An unquiet mind " by Kay Redfield Jamison. This book is about a psychiatrist who suffered through manic depression, but she still was able to achieve her goal and become a doctor. since the lady in the story was going suffering through depression it made her seen kind if better because she knew what her patients was going through. the reason why I chose this book is because this book relates to me. I also suffer with depression and my main goal in life is also becoming a doctor also. I will like to read this book and learn how this person overcame that obstacle. The book that i chose seem like a good book to me.

The reason why I chose to read “Arc of Justice” is because I love to read about the civil rights movement in the past. Since the story is taking Detroit and I use to live in Detroit, I want to know more about its history. It seems like it will catch my attention and that is not a book that I would just put back on the shelve when I’m done with it. I want to read it and recommend it to others. Arc of Justice just the title alone tells a story. It is so powerful. I believe the book will better educate me and it will let me know a thing or two of what was going on in Detroit in 1924.

I chose The Unquiet Mind because I think that it is amazing that someone has the ability to have a disorder and then become the doctor to help others with that same disorder. I think that more people should be like that. When I go to the doctors and they are like can you please tell me your symptoms, I get kind of annoyed. But when the doctor has been in the same position you are it's easier to relate to them. Just reading the summary of the book, I could tell that I would enjoy it because I love learning about the Medical Field. Everyday there is so many new amazing discoveries. I hope to be a doctoe one day and this inspires me to do the best that I can!

Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age

In class we had to choose one book out of the four to read and I picked "Arc of Justice". There are several reasons why I choose to read "Arc of Justice" written by Kevin Boyle. By readying the description it gives a brief idea that the book is written about racial segregation, civil rights, and murder in Detroit. In the description it tells us "Arc of Justice" is based on a true story of black mans life in the 1920’s during a time of struggle for the black community. Just by reading the description of this book I found that it would be very interesting to read. I believe that by reading this book it will show me the struggle in life with segregation, and civil rights in the city of Detroit for an average person.

The reason why I chose "Arc of Justice" by Kevin Boyle because it's something different to me. I always read books that had my interests such as basketball and music. I want to explore my options and read a subject that I have never read before. I'm curious about the 1920s and see how the book relates to it. I like to learn more about race, civil rights, and jazz age. Understanding how the problems of justice are solved in the 1920s are controversial.

I choose to this book because it sounds interesting. It is a book that I could get into and have no problem reading. I am not a big reader so I want to find something that is going to keep me reading. Also the book was based in Detroit so it is something that happened locally and it is a true story.

I chose the book An Unquiet Mind. An Unquiet Mind interested me because I had a friend in High School that had killed herself because she was manic depressive. I thought that it would be interesting to learn about what manic depression is and what people think when they have it. Also, I want to pursue as career as a nurse and may want to work with people that have depression and learn about the way the mind may think when it has this disease is interesting. This novel also is written by someone that has actually experienced manic depression and what it actually feels like which makes the reader feel more understanding of what is going on in the mind.

To be quite simple, I chose the Arc of Justice because while we were at our new student orientation I answered a question right and they gave me the book for free. Besides that point I really think this will be beneficial to read and we'll learn a little more about our own culture here in Detroit.
